Waller turned a rain-soaked Friday night into a showcase of its offensive firepower and defensive opportunism, overwhelming Cy Park 58-13 in a District 23-6A matchup.
The Bulldogs piled up 488 total yards while limiting Cy Park to 130, scoring on defense, through the air and on the ground to build a 30-0 halftime lead.
Deshune McGary put Waller on the board first, intercepting a Cy Park pass and returning it 44 yards untouched for a touchdown with 6:26 left in the opening quarter. The PAT was unsuccessful.
T.K. Gaines and the offense quickly followed. Gaines found Mahky Adams for a 34-yard touchdown with 1:40 left in the first quarter, then connected with Kevin Silas Jr. for a 29-yard score and Adams again for a 17-yard touchdown in the second. Omar Alvarez’s 36-yard field goal with 1:05 left before halftime completed the scoring for the first half.
Gaines finished 15-of-21 for 242 yards and three touchdowns, while Waller’s ground game added another 246 yards.
The Bulldogs kept the pressure on after halftime. Gaines opened the third-quarter scoring with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Dre-dynn White with 9:35 remaining.
Cy Park answered immediately when Basheel Ware returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown. Waller gave the Tigers little time to build on the momentum, though, as Dariyan Smith broke loose for a 68-yard touchdown run on the Bulldogs’ next offensive play.
Gaines then connected with Glowin Mbobile for a 65-yard touchdown with 4:40 left in the third quarter, pushing Waller’s advantage to 51-7.
Smith finished with 143 yards on 10 carries, including the 68-yard score. Gaines added 50 rushing yards on six attempts, while Mbobile led Waller’s receivers with five catches for 96 yards.
Baylor See’s 3-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter accounted for Waller’s final points. Cy Park’s Edi Umana answered with a 12-yard touchdown run with 4:47 remaining, though the PAT was unsuccessful.
Cy Park’s offense struggled throughout the night. The Tigers produced 92 rushing yards and 38 passing yards, with Triston Whipple completing 2 of 9 passes for 25 yards. Umana led the rushing attack with 50 yards on four carries, while Williams Warren had 34 yards on 21 carries.
Waller’s 488 yards were nearly four times Cy Park’s total, and the Bulldogs’ big-play ability was evident throughout the scoring sheet, with touchdown plays of 44, 34, 29, 17, 7, 68 and 65 yards.
The victory moves Waller to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in District 23-6A. The Bulldogs host Cy Springs next Friday.
Cy Park falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in district play and travels to Richmond Foster next Friday.
Despite steady rain throughout the game, Waller’s offense and defense remained in control from start to finish.
