The Woodlands took control early and never let go Friday night, rolling past College Park 39-7 in a rain-soaked District 13-6A matchup.

The game was anything but routine before the opening kickoff. Lightning delayed the start by 1 hour, 25 minutes, and another lightning delay with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter added 36 more minutes to the night. Heavy rain continued throughout the game, at times coming down hard enough to affect play. Halftime was shortened to five minutes, with both teams remaining on the field.

Once play began, however, The Woodlands quickly established control.

The Highlanders finished with 356 yards of total offense, including 228 through the air and 128 on the ground. College Park managed 182 total yards, with 117 rushing and 65 passing.

The Woodlands scored on its opening possession after College Park’s first punt traveled only 12 yards in the wet conditions, setting the Highlanders up deep in Cavaliers territory. Kaden Copelin then connected with Carter Cass for a 21-yard touchdown with 9:19 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point was no good, leaving The Woodlands with a 6-0 lead.

The Highlanders extended the margin just two minutes later when Jason Haskins broke loose for an 82-yard touchdown run. The play took only one snap and pushed the lead to 13-0.

Copelin and Cass connected again later in the quarter, this time on a 3-yard touchdown pass, giving The Woodlands a 20-0 advantage.

The Highlanders added two more touchdowns in the second quarter. Copelin scored on an 11-yard run with 1:29 remaining, and Bryce Stott followed just nine seconds later with a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Woodlands took a 33-0 lead into the shortened halftime.

The Woodlands added to its advantage on its opening possession of the second half, driving 66 yards on 14 plays before Copelin found Cass for their third touchdown connection of the night, a 6-yard scoring pass. The PAT was blocked, leaving the Highlanders ahead 39-0.

College Park finally broke through in the fourth quarter. Bryce Reeves capped a 67-yard, eight-play drive with a 17-yard touchdown run with 1:40 remaining, putting the Cavaliers on the scoreboard and accounting for the game’s final points.

Haskins led The Woodlands’ rushing attack with 118 yards on 14 carries, including his 82-yard touchdown. Copelin completed 14 of 20 passes for 222 yards while also rushing for a touchdown.

Cass was the game’s leading receiver, catching seven passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns. Kaiden Stewart added three receptions for 51 yards.

College Park was led on the ground by Duke Stephens, who carried 20 times for 92 yards. Camden Hughes completed 5 of 12 passes for 65 yards. Brian Snodgrass had two receptions for 24 yards, Julian Cromartie caught two for 19 yards and Nik Ensminger added one reception for 22 yards.

The Woodlands improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in District 13-6A. The Highlanders return home next Friday to face Willis.

College Park fell to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in district play. The Cavaliers will travel to Cleveland next Friday.
