Katy leaned on its familiar formula of a punishing ground game and opportunistic defense to take down Atascocita 28-17.

Mason Hartwell delivered a commanding all-around performance for the Tigers, rushing for 175 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries while completing 10 of 12 passes for 64 yards. He helped Katy pile up 352 total yards, including 288 on the ground.

Hartwell provided the game’s first big play with 9:16 remaining in the opening quarter. He broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run that gave Katy an early 7-0 lead.

Atascocita responded with a 36-yard field goal from Adrian Ramirez at the 1:56 mark, but the Eagles would not score again until late in the fourth quarter.

Katy’s defense produced the defining play of the first half. With 7:24 remaining in the second quarter, Sydney Nguyen recovered a fumble and returned it 13 yards for a touchdown, extending the Tigers’ lead to 14-3.

That score held through halftime and a scoreless third quarter.

The Tigers finally broke the game open early in the fourth quarter. Hartwell finished an 8 play 52-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run at the 11:16 mark, giving Katy a commanding 21-3 advantage.

Tony Manuel added a 2-yard touchdown run less than three minutes later, pushing the lead to 28-3 with 8:45 remaining. Manuel also led Katy’s receivers with three catches for 27 yards.

Atascocita answered when Trenton Weary returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 28-10.

Quarterback Corbin Smejkal added a 2-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds remaining in the game.

Smejkal accounted for most of Atascocita’s offensive production. He rushed 12 times for 111 yards and completed 15 of 28 passes for 131 yards. Isaiah Rasheed led the Eagles’ receivers with two catches for 38 yards.

Atascocita finished with 231 total yards—100 rushing and 131 passing—while Katy’s relentless rushing attack helped the Tigers finish with a 352-231 advantage in total offense.

For Katy, it was a vintage statement: run the football, create turnovers and make the opponent play from behind.
