Cy Lakes opened the 2026 season with a hard-fought 19-14 victory over Katy Freeman Thursday night at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.

The opening kickoff was originally slated for 6:30pm but a lightning delay was declared around 5:15pm and not lifted until after 8pm delaying the opening kickoff to 8:33pm.

The Spartans struck first early in the second quarter when Jose Campos connected on a 40-yard field goal with 11:56 remaining in the half, giving Cypress Lakes a 3-0 advantage.

Cy Lakes extended its lead later in the quarter when quarterback Darius Watson found Braylin Lucas for a 43-yard touchdown. The Spartans converted the two-point try to make it 11-0 with 6:21 left before halftime.

Freeman answered in the closing seconds of the first half. Abraham Alarcon connected with Angel Veliz on a 10-yard touchdown pass, and the Golden Eagles added the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 11-8 with just 14 seconds remaining in the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Cy Lakes created some breathing room early in the fourth. Ja’merce Johnson powered his way into the end zone from three yards out with 11:56 remaining. The Spartans again converted the two-point attempt, pushing their advantage to 19-8.

The Golden Eagles answered when Jeremiah Cooper scored on a 4-yard touchdown run, bringing Freeman within 19-14. The Golden Eagles attempted to pull within a field goal with another two-point try, but the conversion was unsuccessful.

That proved to be the final scoring play of the night as Cy Lakes’ defense held Freeman out of the end zone the rest of the way.
