Cy Lakes found one final answer when it mattered most.
Trailing by four points late in the fourth quarter, the Spartans put together a seven-play, 66-yard drive that ended with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Smith Jr. to Darius Watson with just 21 seconds remaining. Watson was double covered on the play but somehow found a way to haul in the completion for the touchdown. Cy Lakes then held on when Cy Falls missed a 48-yard field goal as time expired, securing a 21-18 victory in a hard-fought District 16-6A matchup Saturday morning.
The game was a defensive struggle throughout, with Cy Lakes recording 15 tackles for loss and Cy Falls adding 11. The combined 26 tackles behind the line of scrimmage repeatedly disrupted offensive rhythm and made sustained drives difficult for both teams.
Cy Lakes improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in District 16-6A. Cy Falls fell to 5-1 overall and also stands at 2-1 in district play.
A Fast Start for the Spartans
Cy Lakes wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. The Spartans opened the game with an 86-yard touchdown drive, highlighted by a 50-yard completion from Smith to Bryce Arrington. Smith finished the possession with a 33-yard touchdown run, and Ja’merce Johnson added the two-point conversion run for an 8-0 lead.
Cy Falls responded with a pair of field goals from Andre Linares. He connected from 42 yards with 2:17 remaining in the first quarter, then added a 38-yard kick with 28 seconds left to pull the Golden Eagles within 8-6.
The Golden Eagles had opportunities to gain momentum, including a possession following an interception that put them at the Cy Lakes 25-yard line. However, their offense continued to face pressure, and a subsequent drive ended with a fumble.
Cy Lakes extended its advantage in the second quarter when Johnson broke free for a 47-yard touchdown run. The extra-point attempt failed, leaving the Spartans ahead 14-6.
Neither offense found the end zone again before halftime. Both defenses continued to make plays behind the line of scrimmage, while turnovers and stalled possessions limited scoring opportunities.
Defensive Pressure Continues
The third quarter remained scoreless as both defenses controlled the action.
Cy Falls struggled to establish a consistent rushing attack, finishing with just 11 net rushing yards. Quarterback Christian Ndujiuba completed 21 of 30 passes for 215 yards, but eight carries for a loss of 46 yards, primarily on sacks, reflected the pressure the Golden Eagles faced.
Cy Lakes also encountered difficulties moving the ball consistently after halftime. The Spartans turned the ball over on a fumble during one possession and later gave it up on downs, while Cy Falls was unable to capitalize on its opportunities.
The defensive battle set the stage for a dramatic fourth quarter.
Cy Falls Takes the Lead Before Late Spartans Rally
Cy Falls finally broke through with 7:29 remaining in the fourth quarter when Ndujiuba connected with Andrew Lewis on a 34-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed, cutting the deficit to 14-12.
After another defensive stop, the Golden Eagles struck again. With 1:54 remaining, Ndujiuba found Murry Charles for a 32-yard touchdown pass. Cy Falls attempted another two-point conversion but came up short, taking an 18-14 lead.
Cy Lakes needed a response, and the Spartans delivered.
Smith directed a seven-play drive covering 66 yards, moving the offense into position for one final scoring opportunity. With 21 seconds left, Smith connected with Watson on a 27-yard touchdown pass to put Cy Lakes back in front, 21-18.
Cy Falls still had a chance to force overtime. The Golden Eagles advanced 19 yards on their final possession, setting up a 48-yard field goal attempt as time expired. The kick missed, ending the comeback bid and preserving the Spartans’ three-point victory.
The win gives Cy Lakes a valuable district result as the Spartans prepare to face Cy-Fair next Friday. Cy Falls will look to rebound against Jersey Village next Friday.
