Cypress Ranch closed out the regular season with a 27-14 victory over Cypress Springs on Friday night, finishing the year 9-1 and turning its attention to the UIL playoffs. For the Panthers, the 4-6 season came to an end with a frustrating result in a game where the overall offensive production was nearly even.

Cypress Ranch finished with 364 total yards. Cypress Springs had 359. The difference was not an inability to move the football. It was what happened when the Panthers had opportunities to put points on the board.

Cypress Ranch struck first, taking its opening possession 74 yards in seven plays. Braden Baker connected with John Fox for a 21-yard touchdown, giving the Mustangs a 7-0 lead with 8:27 remaining in the first quarter.

Cypress Springs answered with a promising drive of its own. The Panthers moved 56 yards in nine plays, reaching the Cypress Ranch 19-yard line before the Mustangs came up with a fourth-down stop. The drive ended without points, and an opportunity to answer the opening touchdown was gone.

Cypress Ranch threatened to extend its lead on the ensuing possession, driving into Cypress Springs territory before a 41-yard field goal attempt came up short. The Panthers couldn’t take advantage, however, and Cypress Ranch found the end zone on its next possession.

Baker connected with Braxton Todd for a 9-yard touchdown with 7:33 remaining in the second quarter. The Mustangs added another score before halftime, this time on a 24-yard pass from Baker to Joshua Richard Jr. with 2:35 left.

A Cypress Springs possession in between those touchdowns ended with an interception by Cypress Ranch’s Antonio Murray. The Mustangs turned the takeaway into points, with Khristian White providing a memorable moment along the way. White hurdled a Cypress Springs defender while extending into a split-leg position, picking up 18 yards on the play. Three plays after the interception, Baker found Richard for the touchdown and a 20-0 lead.

Cypress Springs had another opportunity to get on the scoreboard after halftime. The Panthers put together an 11-play, 63-yard drive that reached the Cypress Ranch 12, but a 29-yard field goal attempt was unsuccessful. Once again, a lengthy possession produced no points.

Cypress Ranch answered with an 80-yard drive, capped by White’s 3-yard touchdown run with 11:54 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs had built a 27-0 advantage.

The Panthers finally broke through on their next possession. Torion Elam provided a big kickoff return to give Cypress Springs the ball at its own 43, and Keon Barrow took advantage on the first play, turning a reverse into a 57-yard touchdown run. The score cut the lead to 27-7 with 11:30 remaining.

Cypress Springs got another opportunity when the Panthers recovered a fumble on the ensuing Cypress Ranch possession, taking over at the Mustangs’ 40-yard line. But the drive ended on downs, leaving the Panthers without points despite another favorable starting position.

The Panthers eventually found the end zone again with 1:18 remaining. Myles Hamilton connected with Connor Patrick for a 56-yard touchdown, accounting for the final 27-14 margin.

The final numbers tell part of the story. Cypress Springs finished with 359 total yards, just five fewer than Cypress Ranch. The Panthers had 199 rushing yards and 160 passing yards, while the Mustangs finished with 136 rushing yards and 228 passing yards.

The difference was the opportunities that didn’t become points. Cypress Springs reached the Cypress Ranch 19 in the first quarter, drove to the 12 after halftime, and later took possession at the Mustangs’ 40 following a fumble recovery. Those possessions produced no points. Against a team that finished 9-1, the missed chances proved costly.

Cypress Ranch now moves on to the bi-district round, where the Mustangs will travel to Hutto. The game day and kickoff time have not yet been determined.
