UPDATE — FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6
Thursday night’s results in District 23-6A have settled the playoff picture for tonight’s matchup. Cypress Ranch has clinched second place in the district standings and the Division I, No. 2 playoff seed. Cypress Springs has been eliminated from playoff contention.
——————————————————–
Cypress Ranch has already secured its place in the postseason. Cypress Springs still has a chance to join the playoff field, but the Panthers will need help before they take the field Friday night.
The Mustangs enter the regular-season finale at 8-1 overall and 5-1 in district play. They have clinched a playoff berth and are locked into the Division I No. 2 seed. Cypress Springs is 4-5 overall and 3-3 in district play, and its postseason hopes depend on two results going its way.
Thursday’s matchup between Waller and Richmond George Ranch will determine whether the Panthers still have a path. George Ranch must defeat Waller on Thursday, and Cypress Springs must beat Cypress Ranch on Friday. A Waller victory would eliminate Cypress Springs before kickoff.
The stakes are different, but both teams have a final opportunity to make a statement before the postseason begins.

The Breakdown
Cypress Springs Offense vs. Cypress Ranch Defense
Cypress Springs has produced 3,359 yards of total offense through nine games, an average of 373.2 yards per contest. The Panthers have gained 1,858 yards on the ground and 1,501 through the air.
The rushing attack has been led by senior Yogi Martin, who has 810 yards and 13 touchdowns on 111 carries. Senior quarterback Jared Hagger has added 333 rushing yards and six touchdowns while throwing for 821 yards and eight scores. Junior Myles Hamilton has thrown for 680 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Panthers have multiple options in the passing game. Junior Torion Elam leads the team with 463 receiving yards on 28 catches. Senior Connor Patrick has 362 yards and eight touchdowns on 18 receptions, while senior Keon Barrow has 205 yards and five receiving touchdowns.
Martin’s availability is an important question entering Friday. He left last week’s game against Fulshear on crutches after suffering an injury, and his status for the Cypress Ranch game is uncertain.
Quarterback usage is another storyline. Hamilton started against Fulshear, while Hagger entered in the fourth quarter and finished the game. There is no confirmed information about the reason for the change or the quarterback plan for Friday.
Cypress Ranch has been particularly effective defensively, allowing 2,134 yards through nine games, or 237.1 per contest. The Mustangs have surrendered 1,329 rushing yards and 805 passing yards. Their 13.33 points allowed per game ranks 13th among 6A teams statewide.
Senior Caleb Clack leads the Mustangs with 46 tackles and four tackles for loss. Senior Amari Vickerson has five tackles for loss, while sophomore Antonio Murray has three interceptions and two blocked kicks. Junior David Crosby and senior Jacob Lee have added two interceptions apiece.
Cypress Springs will need to find ways to sustain drives against a defense that has limited opponents throughout the season. The Panthers’ ability to establish the run, protect the football, and create opportunities for Elam, Patrick, and Barrow in the passing game will be central to the matchup.

Junior Khristian White leads the ground game with 711 yards and 10 touchdowns on 126 carries. Sophomore Tristan Blaylock has contributed 246 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Senior Derrick McCullar is Baker’s leading receiving threat, with 649 yards and 12 touchdowns. Senior Manny Leyja has added 383 receiving yards and six touchdowns. The Mustangs have also received contributions from Joshua Richard Jr., Kelechi Onyemaobi, and John Fox.

Senior Daniel Isaiah has 50 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. Junior Emanuelle Pedroza has 48 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and four sacks. Pedroza also has an interception return for a touchdown.
The front seven will be challenged to contain White and the Mustangs’ rushing attack while also accounting for Baker’s ability to make plays through the air. Cypress Ranch has shown it can score in bunches, including a 62-point performance against Richmond Foster last week.
Special Teams
Cypress Springs senior Keon Barrow has been a productive returner, averaging 26.64 yards on kickoff returns and taking one back for a touchdown. Freshman Joshua Lewis is averaging 29.50 yards on punt returns, with a long return of 80 yards.

Cypress Ranch senior Nate Carrier has converted all 43 of his extra-point attempts and has made four field goals. He is averaging 49.18 yards on punts.
