Two teams tied for second place in District 23-6A will meet Saturday night when the Waller Bulldogs take on the Cypress Ranch Mustangs. Both enter at 6-1 overall and 3-1 in district play, making this a matchup between teams with similar records but contrasting statistical profiles and program histories.
Waller has built one of the area’s most productive offenses, averaging 46 points and more than 507 yards per game. Cypress Ranch has paired a more balanced offense with one of the district’s stingiest defenses, allowing just 12.86 points per game. The Mustangs won both previous meetings, including a 35-33 decision last season, so the Bulldogs have an opportunity to change that history while strengthening their position in the district standings.
The matchup also carries significance beyond the current standings. Waller’s football tradition dates to 1937, while Cypress Ranch’s program began in 2010. The Mustangs have made the playoffs every season since the program began, including every year since 2014. Waller returned to the playoffs in 2025 for the first time since 2014 and is looking to make consecutive postseason appearances for the first time since the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The Bulldogs won seven games last year, their most since an eight-win campaign in 2014. A victory Saturday would give Waller its seventh win of the season, matching last year’s total with games still remaining.
Both teams are likely to be placed in separate playoff divisions, so the matchup is more about district finish, pride and head-to-head bragging rights than a direct playoff-seeding battle. With two 6-1 teams trying to build momentum for the final stretch of the regular season, there is plenty at stake.

The Breakdown
Waller’s explosive offense against Cypress Ranch’s disciplined defense
The clearest contrast is the gap between Waller’s offensive production and Cypress Ranch’s ability to limit opponents. Through seven games, Waller has generated 3,553 total yards, an average of 507.57 per game. Cypress Ranch has allowed 1,642 total yards, or 234.57 per game. The Mustangs have surrendered just 90 points in seven games, compared with 138 allowed by Waller.
Waller’s offense has produced 1,999 passing yards and 1,554 rushing yards. Quarterback T.K. Gaines has thrown for 1,999 yards, 24 touchdowns and one interception, completing 98 of 164 attempts. His production is complemented by Dariyan Smith’s 803 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 88 carries. Smith’s 9.13 yards per carry gives the Bulldogs a dangerous running option alongside their downfield passing game.
The receiving corps has helped turn that production into explosive plays. Glowin Mbobile has 44 receptions for 1,001 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 22.75 yards per catch. Freshman Mahky Adams has added 338 yards and six touchdowns on 14 receptions, while Kevin Silas has 304 yards and a touchdown on 14 catches. The Bulldogs have multiple receivers capable of changing a game with a single play, and opposing defenses cannot focus exclusively on Mbobile without leaving other targets available.
Cypress Ranch will need to control the explosive plays without allowing Waller to establish its running game. The Mustangs’ defensive profile is encouraging: they have allowed 613 passing yards and 1,029 rushing yards over seven games. Their stronger statistical performance against the pass makes the matchup particularly interesting against a Waller offense that has produced nearly 2,000 passing yards. If Cypress Ranch can force the Bulldogs into long-yardage situations, pressure Gaines and make Waller sustain drives rather than relying on big plays, the Mustangs can make the game much more difficult for the high-scoring Bulldogs.
Cypress Ranch’s offense has several ways to move the ball
Cypress Ranch has produced 2,152 total yards, averaging 307.43 per game, with 1,189 passing yards and 963 rushing yards. Senior quarterback Braden Baker has completed 79 of 107 passes for 1,116 yards, 16 touchdowns and two interceptions. His 73.8% completion rate gives the Mustangs a reliable passing foundation, and his ability to distribute the ball efficiently has helped them average 34.71 points per game.
Senior receiver Derrick McCullar II is Baker’s leading downfield target. McCullar has caught 21 passes for 481 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 22.90 yards per reception. Manny Leyja has added 250 yards and four touchdowns on 23 catches, while John Fox has contributed 142 yards and a touchdown. That distribution gives Baker multiple options, though McCullar’s combination of yardage and touchdowns makes him the most prominent big-play threat.
On the ground, junior Khristian White leads the Mustangs with 491 yards and eight touchdowns on 91 carries. Sophomore Tristan Blaylock has rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. His 11.72 yards per carry reflects the ability to produce chunk gains when he gets opportunities. Baker also contributes as a runner, adding another dimension for a defense that must account for both the passing game and quarterback movement.
Waller’s defense has allowed 1,886 total yards, or 269.43 per game, including 984 rushing yards and 902 passing yards. The Bulldogs have been more vulnerable through the air than Cypress Ranch has, which puts a premium on their pass rush and coverage communication. Waller must prevent Baker from settling into a rhythm with McCullar and Leyja while staying disciplined against White and Blaylock. A defense that can force a few long third downs and make Cypress Ranch work for every possession would give Waller’s high-powered offense more opportunities.
Turnovers could change the game
Waller’s defense has created a major advantage in the turnover column. Waller has a plus-13 turnover ratio, with six interceptions and nine fumble recoveries on defense, against one interception and one fumble lost on offense. Cypress Ranch has four interceptions and four fumble recoveries, with two interceptions and two fumbles lost on offense, for a plus-four ratio.
That difference could be pivotal. Waller has demonstrated an ability to take the ball away, and Cypress Ranch cannot afford to give the Bulldogs extra possessions in a game against an offense averaging 46 points. Conversely, the Mustangs have been efficient with the ball and should look to maintain that discipline against a defense that has made turnovers a strength.
Senior defensive back Weston Hubertus has three interceptions in the district report, while Corbin Morse has two and Deshune McGary has one. Cypress Ranch sophomore defensive back Antonio Murray has two interceptions. If either secondary can turn a passing mistake into a short field, the resulting points could swing the contest.
Players to Watch
Waller Bulldogs
- T.K. Gaines, QB, Junior — Gaines has thrown for 1,999 yards, 24 touchdowns and one interception. His ability to push the ball downfield while protecting possession will be central to Waller’s offensive plan against a defense allowing fewer than 13 points per game.
- Dariyan Smith, RB, Senior — Smith has rushed for 803 yards and 13 touchdowns on 88 carries, averaging 9.13 yards per attempt. His efficiency gives Waller a major counter to defenses built around stopping Gaines and the passing game.
- Glowin Mbobile, WR/DB, Senior — Mbobile has 44 catches for 1,001 yards and 10 touchdowns. He averages 22.75 yards per reception and is the Bulldogs’ leading receiving threat, making his matchup with Cypress Ranch’s secondary one of the game’s most important individual battles.
- Trace Geigley, LB, Senior — Geigley leads Waller with 78 tackles and has added four tackles for loss. His work in the middle of the defense will be important against a Cypress Ranch offense that can use both White and Blaylock in the running game.
- Weston Hubertus, K/P/QB/DB, Junior — Hubertus has three interceptions according to the supplied team notes, along with 44 tackles and nine punts averaging 33.78 yards. His versatility and ability to create a takeaway make him a player to watch on defense and special teams.
- Deshune McGary, DB/LB/WR, Senior — McGary has nine pass breakups and an interception. His coverage work will matter against Baker and McCullar, particularly when Cypress Ranch looks to attack downfield.
Cypress Ranch Mustangs
- Braden Baker, QB, Senior — Baker has completed 73.8% of his passes for 1,116 yards, 16 touchdowns and two interceptions. His accuracy and decision-making will be tested by a Waller defense that has created 15 takeaways through interceptions and fumble recoveries.
- Khristian White, RB, Junior — White has 491 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 91 carries. He gives Cypress Ranch a dependable option on early downs and can help keep Waller’s offense on the sideline.
- Derrick McCullar II, WR/PR, Senior — McCullar has 481 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 21 catches, averaging 22.90 yards per reception. He is Baker’s most productive downfield target and also contributes as a punt returner.
- Caleb Clack, FS, Senior — Clack leads the Mustangs in the district report with 59 tackles and six tackles for loss. His work in the secondary and against the run will be important as Cypress Ranch tries to contain Waller’s balanced, explosive offense.
- Antonio Murray, DB, Sophomore — Murray has two interceptions. His ability to read Gaines and capitalize on passing opportunities could be especially important against an offense that takes chances downfield.
- Nate Carrier, K, Senior — Carrier has averaged 48.29 yards per punt and has made 32 of 32 extra points and four field goals. His leg can change field position and give Cypress Ranch a special-teams advantage in a close game.

Keys to the Game
Waller Bulldogs
- Use the running game to complement Gaines. Smith’s production can keep the Mustangs from focusing entirely on Waller’s passing attack and help the Bulldogs remain balanced.
- Pressure Baker and disrupt his timing. The Mustangs’ quarterback has been highly accurate. Making him uncomfortable could interrupt the connection with McCullar and Leyja.
- Win the turnover battle. Waller’s plus-13 turnover ratio is a major strength. The Bulldogs need to continue taking the ball away while limiting their own mistakes.
Cypress Ranch Mustangs
- Limit Waller’s explosive offense. The Mustangs need to prevent long gains through the air and on the ground, forcing Waller to sustain drives.
- Get McCullar involved early. His downfield production is a key part of the Mustangs’ attack. Finding him without forcing risky throws will be important against Waller’s opportunistic defense.
- Protect the football. Waller has generated a plus-13 turnover ratio. Cypress Ranch must avoid interceptions and fumbles that give the Bulldogs short fields.
Keep Your Eye On
- Gaines vs. the Cypress Ranch secondary: Waller’s quarterback has 24 touchdown passes and one interception. The Mustangs’ ability to disrupt his timing without giving up explosive plays will shape the game.
- Baker and McCullar’s connection: The combination has produced eight receiving touchdowns. Waller’s defensive backs must prevent them from changing the game with a handful of completions.
- The turnover margin: Waller has created more takeaways, while Cypress Ranch has been efficient on offense. One interception or fumble recovery could quickly change momentum.
From the Coaches
Waller head coach Marcus Mendoza:
“I think this is going to be a great matchup for both teams. Last year’s game came down to the final drive, and I expect another competitive game this year. Our players and coaches understand how important this matchup is and have been working hard all week, locking in on our game plan and making sure we’re ready to execute on game day. We’re excited for the opportunity and looking forward to a great game against Cy Ranch.”
