The Breakdown
The matchup begins with two run heavy teams. George Ranch leads District 23-6A’s in rushing yards with 1,351 rushing yards through five games. Bridgeland is second in 23-6A with 1261 rushing yards through five games.
Bridgeland has a major weapon in senior running back Kash Schwab, who has rushed for 1,061 yards and 17 touchdowns on 106 carries. Schwab is averaging 10.01 yards per carry and has a long run of 87 yards.
George Ranch’s ground game is led by senior Brandon Jefferson, who has 971 rushing yards on 134 carries, averaging 7.25 yards per carry with nine touchdowns. Junior Michael Amaechi has added 293 yards and two touchdowns.
The quarterback matchup also deserves attention. George Ranch senior Tony Morrison has completed 45 of 69 passes for 375 yards and five touchdowns. Bridgeland senior Taylon Villanueva is 51-of-72 for 665 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while completing 70.8 percent of his passes.
Bridgeland’s passing game has produced several reliable targets. Senior Jackson Gruber has 14 receptions for 269 yards and a touchdown, averaging 19.21 yards per catch. Senior Jackson Ewing has 19 catches for 183 yards, while Schwab has added 107 receiving yards and a touchdown.
George Ranch’s leading receiving threat is sophomore Jerrick Thomas, who has 17 catches for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Daniel Johnson III has 14 catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. Thomas’ ability to provide a vertical threat could become particularly important if Bridgeland loads the box to slow Jefferson.
Defensively, Bridgeland has several players capable of disrupting the Longhorns’ offense. Junior Regan Fodje has 26 tackles, including 13 tackles for loss, while senior Gavin Aldmon has 31 tackles and eight tackles for loss. Ethan Shitera has 27 tackles and six tackles for loss. Fodje has also recorded five sacks, while Aldmon has four.
George Ranch has shown a knack for creating takeaways, with four defensive interceptions and one fumble recovery through five games. Jackson Lineberger and Ron Harris each have an interception. The Longhorns’ overall turnover ratio is plus-two. Bridgeland is also plus-two overall, with three defensive interceptions and four fumble recoveries.
The biggest statistical question may be whether George Ranch can keep Bridgeland’s offense from creating early separation. The Bears are averaging 33.80 points per game compared with 25.20 for the Longhorns, but George Ranch has enough rushing production to shorten the game if Jefferson can consistently move the chains. Bridgeland’s ability to contain Jefferson while Schwab continues his remarkable production will be central to the outcome.
Players to Watch
George Ranch
- Brandon Jefferson, RB/Senior: Jefferson has rushed for 971 yards and nine touchdowns on 134 carries, averaging 7.25 yards per carry. His ability to control the ground game is critical against a Bridgeland defense built to attack from multiple levels.
- Tony Morrison, QB/Senior: Morrison is 45-of-69 for 375 yards and five touchdowns. His passing efficiency and ability to complement Jefferson will determine whether George Ranch can keep Bridgeland from crowding the line of scrimmage.
- Jerrick Thomas, WR/Sophomore: Thomas has 17 catches for 191 yards and three touchdowns, including a 73-yard reception. His explosiveness gives the Longhorns a needed counter to Bridgeland’s focus on the running game.
Bridgeland
- Kash Schwab, RB/Senior: Schwab has rushed for 1,061 yards and 17 touchdowns on 106 carries while averaging 10.01 yards per attempt. He also has 107 receiving yards and a touchdown.
- Taylon Villanueva, QB/Senior: Villanueva has completed 51 of 72 passes for 665 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, completing 70.8 percent of his attempts.
- Regan Fodje, DL/Junior: Fodje has 26 tackles and 13 tackles for loss, along with five sacks. His ability to penetrate the George Ranch offensive line could make life difficult for Jefferson and Morrison.
Keys to the Game
George Ranch
- Feed Brandon Jefferson: The Longhorns need to establish their senior running back and keep the offense out of obvious passing situations.
- Create balance: Tony Morrison must make enough plays through the air to prevent Bridgeland from loading the box.
- Limit Kash Schwab: Schwab’s 1,061 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns make stopping the Bridgeland ground game priority No. 1.
Bridgeland
- Contain Jefferson: Keeping George Ranch’s leading rusher from controlling the game allows the Bears to dictate the pace.
- Protect Villanueva: George Ranch needs pressure to disrupt the passing game, so keeping Villanueva comfortable will be important.
- Get Schwab going early: The Bears’ best offensive weapon can force George Ranch to commit additional defenders to the run.
Keep Your Eye On
- Brandon Jefferson vs. Bridgeland’s front seven: Jefferson is averaging 7.25 yards per carry, while Regan Fodje has 13 tackles for loss.
- Tony Morrison’s passing efficiency: Morrison’s ability to hit Jerrick Thomas and other receivers could determine whether George Ranch can stay balanced.
- Taylon Villanueva against the Longhorn secondary: Villanueva has completed 70.8 percent of his passes with only one interception.
From the Coaches
George Ranch Coach Jomaul Mason
“Bridgeland is a very good football team, and we have a tremendous amount of respect for their program and how they play the game. They are well coached, physical, disciplined, and they have playmakers who can change a game quickly. For us, this week is really about George Ranch and our response. We didn’t play to our standard last week, but one game does not define this football team. Our focus has been on getting back to the details, playing with great effort, taking care of the football, eliminating self-inflicted mistakes, and competing for four quarters. This is another important district game and another opportunity for our kids to show their growth and toughness. We have to stay process-oriented, play one snap at a time, and understand that everything matters. I’m excited to see how our guys respond Friday night.”
