The Breakdown

Magnolia’s most difficult assignment is to move the ball consistently against a Klein defense that has allowed 30 points in four games. The Bulldogs have shown they can score: after being shut out by Willis in the opener, they put up 27 against College Station, 55 against Magnolia West and 35 against Klein Collins. Saturday will test whether that production carries over against the Bearkats.

Quarterback Chase Lowery drives Magnolia’s offense in two ways. Lowery has 489 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, along with 513 passing yards. Cash Ferrell has contributed 255 rushing yards and three scores. Klein’s defensive front will have to account for Lowery on designed runs and passing plays alike; if the Bearkats contain him, Magnolia will need Ferrell and its receivers to keep drives moving.

Klein has produced 1,027 rushing yards and 734 passing yards in its first four games.. Quarterback Carter Lattelle has thrown seven touchdown passes. Mike Brown and Kain Bollen have combined for 622 receiving yards and seven touchdown catches, giving Klein two proven downfield options. Magnolia’s defensive challenge is to limit explosive passes while remaining sound against a rushing attack led by Kendrick Brown, who has 331 yards on 37 carries.

The teams’ recent results point to a meaningful third-down battle. Magnolia scored 35 against Klein Collins but conceded 42; Klein has reached at least 34 points in each of its two district wins. A few stops could determine whether this becomes the kind of close contest the teams played in 2024 or a game controlled by Klein’s defense.

Special teams could matter in a tight finish. Klein’s kicker Kerian Grimes has nine touchbacks on 16 kickoffs. Field position and clean coverage will be especially valuable for Magnolia if it can force Klein to work through long drives.

Players to Watch

Magnolia

• Chase Lowery, QB: His 489 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns make him the central matchup for Klein’s defense. He has also passed for 513 yards.
• Cash Ferrell, RB: Ferrell has rushed for 255 yards and three touchdowns and caught nine passes for 85 yards, giving Magnolia another way to sustain possessions.
• Ty Miller, defense: Miller’s 20 tackles, 23 assists, three sacks and two forced fumbles. His pressure and ability to disrupt plays could help Magnolia slow Klein’s balanced offense.

Klein

• Carter Lattelle, QB: Lattelle has completed 39 of 62 passes for 734 yards and seven touchdowns through four games.
• Mike Brown, receiver: Brown leads Klein with 16 catches for 360 yards and four touchdowns.
• Dolan Guedry, defense: Guedry has 29 total tackles and eight tackles for loss. His work near the line of scrimmage will be important against Lowery and Ferrell.

Keys to the Game

Magnolia

1. Give Lowery room to operate: His rushing production is a major part of the offense, and productive early downs will keep the full playbook available.
2. Get Ferrell involved: Ferrell can contribute as both a runner and receiver, making Klein account for more than Lowery.
3. Limit deep completions: Brown and Bollen have combined for seven receiving touchdowns. Magnolia must keep catches from becoming immediate scores.

Klein

1. Contain Lowery on every down: His eight rushing touchdowns demand attention even when Magnolia sets up to pass.
2. Make Magnolia sustain drives: Klein’s defense has allowed only 30 points this season; limiting explosive plays can force the Bulldogs to execute repeatedly.
3. Maintain offensive balance: The Bearkats’ rushing and passing production gives them options against different defensive looks.

Magnolia Head Coach Craig Martin

“Excited for another tough 15-6A match-up.  Klein is a very good football team with a lot of quality players.  They play fast and physical on both sides of the ball and we will need to be able to handle and match that physicality.  

Defensively they are aggressive and have not given up many points this year at all.  We will have our hands full trying to run the ball and pass protect.  Keys for us will be to identify the pressures they like to bring, stay on blocks, and pass protect well.  But we are going to have to be able to establish a consistent run game and throw the ball effectively to be successful.  You don’t want to spend all night in 3rd and longs!

Offensively they run the ball extremely well.  They use their formations, and motions well.  QB has a big arm and really good receivers to throw to.  We need to get lined up right to their formations and control the run game without allowing 3-4 yards per carry.  DB’s will have to have great eye discipline to not fall asleep and lose their receivers on play action passes.  We will also have to defend their 2 point plays to not allow them to get 8 points per score.

Their special teams are also aggressive so we will have to stay locked in.  They will fake punts, try onside kicks, basically anything you can think of.  Their returners are explosive and we need to cover well and tackle even better.”
