It’s time to take a look at reality. Up to this point, I’ve given you my opinion on how the districts will break down. Now it’s time to look at the facts: who has clinched a playoff spot, who is in by winning out, who needs help, and who has been eliminated.

Keep in mind that the scenarios below are conservative. I don’t have every tiebreaker for every district, so I’m working with what I know. It’s entirely possible that a team listed under Needs Help could actually be a Win & In team or an Eliminated team once the official tiebreakers are applied. However, if I don’t have the tiebreaker rules or can’t confidently determine the outcome, that team will remain in the Needs Help category.

The goal is to give you an idea of what’s left to be played for. This analysis isn’t intended to be the absolute word on every playoff scenario, but rather a guide to the possibilities that remain. In districts where I have the tiebreaker rules and can apply them, I can be much more certain about the outcomes. Where those rules are unavailable, I’ll be clear about the limitations.

One final note about the math: When I discuss win/loss combinations, I’m talking about every possible combination of wins and losses in the remaining district games, with each combination treated equally as a mathematical possibility. The math alone cannot tell me that one combination is more likely to happen than another.

For example, if a team makes the playoffs in 10 out of 100 possible scenarios, that does not mean it has a 10% chance of making the playoffs. It means the team qualifies in 10 of the 100 possible combinations of wins and losses, without accounting for the likelihood of any individual game outcome or combination of outcomes.

With those limitations understood, let’s get to the math: who is in, who can win and get in, who needs help, and who has been eliminated.

NEEDS HELP

Conroe Tigers (2-3 district): Remaining opponents: Cleveland & Willis

Conroe Oak Ridge War Eagles (2-3 district): Remaining opponents: The Woodlands College Park & The Woodlands.

SO YOU’RE TELLING ME THERE’S A CHANCE

Conroe Caney Creek Panthers (1-4 district): Caney Creek is still mathematically alive, but the path is narrow. The Panthers must win both games to finish 3-4 and then need several other results to fall their way. A closer look at those possibilities follows below.

  • Grand Oaks must lose both remaining games — against The Woodlands and Cleveland — to finish 3-4.
  • Conroe must beat Willis and lose to Cleveland.
  • Willis must lose both remaining games.
  • Oak Ridge must lose at least one remaining game.

There are eight remaining district games, creating 256 possible combinations of wins and losses. If Caney Creek wins both of its games, there are 22 combinations in which the final win totals leave the Panthers in a potential top-four position based on records alone.

And all that only puts Caney Creek is a position for tiebreakers to come into play.

The District 15-6A playoff race is a mess — and that’s putting it mildly. Klein has clinched a playoff berth, but for the teams still fighting for the remaining spots, there’s no simple “win out and you’re in” formula. With several contenders still able to affect one another’s chances, the final two weeks will be wild.
