Each Monday I’ll give you 10 thoughts or observations from the past weekend of action.

 

Here’s my observations from Week 3.

 

Don’t count DeSoto out just yet

After opening 0-2 with losses to Florida powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas and Allen, DeSoto rescued its season by upsetting No. 16 Duncanville 21-20.

SaRod Baker scored all three DeSoto touchdowns, and the Eagles blocked a fourth-quarter extra point to preserve the one-point victory. DeSoto entered Saturday having lost its previous two meetings with Duncanville by 20 and 22 points; this time, one special-teams snap may have changed the temperature of its entire season.

 

North Shore owns the Cotton Bowl nightcap

No. 2 North Shore survived top-ranked Class 5A Division II South Oak Cliff 23-21.

South Oak Cliff grabbed its first lead during the fourth quarter, but North Shore answered immediately with the winning drive. Ja’Voris Taylor threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to La’Damian Defreeze, while the Mustang defense intercepted two passes. North Shore is 3-0; South Oak Cliff is still searching for its first win. 

 

Allen’s offense keeps ringing the bell

No. 4 Allen marched into Dragon Stadium and overwhelmed No. 18 Southlake Carroll 56-35.

Sophomore quarterback Ty Snell threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, and Lyndon Spriggs rushed for 173 yards and three scores. Allen scored on all five first-half possessions and led 35-21 at halftime.

The Eagles have now beaten Duncanville, DeSoto and Carroll by a combined 132-48. After three weeks, nobody in Class 6A owns a more impressive résumé. 

 

Prosper adds to resume

No. 23 Prosper outlasted No. 15 Austin Westlake 49-40, remaining unbeaten while handing the Chaparrals their first loss.

Prosper receiver Cash McCoy caught eight passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns, while Elliott Brown added seven receptions for 118 yards and two scores. Westlake quarterback Patton Jones answered with 428 yards and three touchdowns on 24-of-32 passing.

Prosper entered the season outside the top 25. It will not remain near the bottom much longer. 

 

Crawford’s perfect start survives the Reservation

No. 10 Class 5A Division II Fort Bend Crawford went into Port Neches-Groves and defeated the sixth-ranked Indians 28-23.

The Chargers are 3-0 after beating La Porte, Katy Freeman and PNG by a combined 107-63. A program that reached 12 wins last season has graduated from intriguing newcomer to legitimate regional threat.

 

Gilmer turns last year’s humiliation upside down

Gilmer stunned seventh-ranked Class 4A Division I Kilgore 64-50 in an East Texas scorefest.

The result carried extra sting—and satisfaction. Kilgore defeated Gilmer 66-6 in 2025, the Buckeyes’ largest margin of defeat since 1977. One year later, Gilmer hung 64 on the two-time defending 4A Division I state finalist. That is a 74-point swing in margin. 

 

East Bernard topples a No. 1

Fourth-ranked Class 3A Division II East Bernard edged top-ranked Class 2A Division I Ganado 35-33.

The Brahmas improved to 3-0 and have now beaten Edna and Ganado—two respected lower-classification programs—in consecutive weeks. Ganado’s 14-game regular-season winning streak ended, opening the door for Shiner, Joaquin and others to challenge for the new No. 1 spot in 2A Division I

 

Life Oak Cliff breaks the scoreboard

Class 3A Division I Life Oak Cliff routed Bonham 105-14, the second-highest scoring performance by a Texas 11-man team this century.

Ironically the highest 11-man score recorded this century was in 2021 with Bonham bested Commerce 129-70. 

The Lions are 3-0 and have outscored their opponents 220-34 under second-year coach Welton Johnson. 

 

Water Valley applies the 45-point rule

Eighth-ranked Class 1A Division I Water Valley followed its 93-90 thriller against former No. 1 Rankin by blasting No. 10 Sands 89-47.

The Wildcats are 3-0 and have scored 245 points—more than 81 per game. Beating two ranked opponents in consecutive weeks should propel Water Valley much closer to the top of the six-man rankings.

 

Rosehill Christian remains spotless

Tomball Rosehill Christian improved to 4-0 with a 35-0 victory over Northside Lions Sports Association.

The Eagles have outscored four opponents 205-34, surpassing 35 points each week and producing their first shutout. Rosehill closes non-district play against Spring Frassati Catholic before beginning its TAPPS Division IV schedule.
