Matchup History

This will be the 3rd meeting between the two teams. Tomball won both previous meetings (31-25 in 2024, 24-14 in 2025).

The Breakdown

Tomball will try to build upon a dominant opening performance when it visits Cinco Ranch on Saturday evening in a matchup of two perennial Houston-area playoff programs.

The visiting Cougars arrive with momentum after shutting out Stratford 38-0. Tomball rushed for 277 yards, surrendered no points and displayed few signs of the inexperience that concerned coach Dave Handal entering the season.

Cinco Ranch’s scheduled opener at defending Class 5A Division I champion Smithson Valley was stopped with the Rangers leading 7-0 and was recorded as “no contest.”. That leaves Saturday as the first full examination for a Cinco Ranch roster replacing 14 starters.

Tomball returned only three offensive starters from last season’s 9-3 team, but one of them is junior running back Ian Thomas. The Power Four prospect rushed for 1,544 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2025 and leads an offense built to control the line of scrimmage.

Thomas is complemented by senior Trevon Johnson, a physical runner who contributed 689 yards and six touchdowns last season. Their contrasting styles give Tomball the ability to maintain fresh legs without dramatically changing its offensive approach.

Left tackle Jacob Minuti is the only returning starter on the offensive line, making the unit’s performance in the 277-yard rushing effort against Stratford especially encouraging. Saturday’s matchup against a more experienced Cinco Ranch defense should reveal how quickly the rebuilt front has developed.

Tomball also brings an experienced defensive core. Safety Caleb Gafford recorded 60 tackles and three interceptions last season, while two-way standout Chance Green broke up 14 passes. Defensive linemen Dawson Siegert and Bennet Tucker provide experience up front.

Kicker Andres Von Der Meden gives Tomball another significant advantage. His leg could become especially important if the game settles into a low-scoring defensive struggle.

Cinco Ranch is attempting to replace its starting quarterback and all five offensive linemen from a team that finished 8-4, placed second in its district and reached the area round.

The new quarterback will at least have two proven targets. Junior Jacob Chevez set a school record with 16 touchdown receptions last season and is capable of turning short passes into explosive gains. Max Williams caught 48 passes for 710 yards, giving Cinco Ranch another dependable option on the opposite side.

Senior running back Brayden Gonzalez returns after rushing for 673 yards and eight touchdowns. His quickness and vision will be vital as Cinco Ranch attempts to keep Tomball’s defensive front from attacking an inexperienced passing game.

Defensively, Cinco Ranch’s greatest strength is its secondary. Safety Andrew Reagan accumulated 106 tackles last season and will play a major role in preventing Thomas and Johnson from reaching the open field.

Linebacker Christian Jackson recorded eight tackles for loss, while junior defensive end Chinachi Iroha provides size and athleticism off the edge. Those two will be central to Cinco Ranch’s effort to disrupt Tomball’s ground game before it gains momentum.

Cinco Ranch Head Coach Chris Dudley: “Coach Handal does an outstanding job with Tomball each year. They are a perennial playoff team. They play a physical brand of football at all positions and are extremely sound in the kicking game each year. You can tell from afar that the culture of the program is really strong. Ian Thomas is someone we will have our hands full with. He is a complete back. Tre’von Johnson is also an elite player at RB. On defense Tomball plays sound football and makes you work for things. We feel like we gave one away two years ago, we were up 25-16 with less than 4 minutes left in the game and lost 31-25. Last year, they stymied our offense and we were just 12-26 passing the ball. Our run game wasn’t much better in a 24-14 loss. It should be a competitive matchup and one that will make us a better football team because we are playing a quality program.”
