Terry Bussey broke the opening play from scrimmage of the second half 74 yards for a touchdown to give the Timpson Bears a 21-14 lead over the Refugio Bobcats. The Bears wouldn’t score again and the Bobcats rallied for the tying touchdown mid-way through the quarter and the go-ahead field goal with 9 seconds remaining in the game to win 24-21 and advance the 2DA1 State Championship game Thursday, 12/15, 11 a.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, with Refugio leading 21-4, Timpson’s Vosky Howard intercepted a deep Refugio pass at the Bear 15. A loss of two yards in three plays resulted in a Timpson punt that gave Refugio possession of the ball at the Refugio 41.

After a pass resulting in a 5-yard loss, 4 different Bobcats carried the ball totaling 46 yards to tie the game at 21 on a 3-yard run from Jordan King and a successful extra point with 7:43 remaining in the game.

Timpson then drove down the field and was facing 4th and 5 from the Timpson 31. Bussey rolled to his right and appeared to have a lane to secure the first down but slipped on the turf as he cut to go up field resulting in a turn over on down at the Refugio 33 with 3:44 remaining in the game.

Refugio then patiently moved the down then field with again 4 differ ball carriers netting 29 yards to move the ball to the Timpson 38. Then Kelan Brown connected with a covered Ernest Campbell who bullied his way down to the Timpson 3.

After one rush attempt for no gain, Alex Placencia booted the 20-yard field goal that send the Bobcats back to the state championship game after a 2-year absence.

After a scoreless first quarter, Bussey got the Bobcats on the board with a 85-yard break-away run for a TD on the first play of the 2nd quarter.

Refugio then recovered an onside kick at the 50-yard line. After a loss of 1 yard, Bussey completed a screen pass to Amare Bruton who broke it 51 yards to spot the Bobcats to a 14-point lead with 10:49 left in the first half.

Refugio cracked the scoreboard on the subsequent drive moving the ball down to the Timpson 13 behind 6 rushed and a face masking penalty before Kelan Brown connected with Campbell who weaved through defenders to cut the score to 14-7 with 7:16 remaining before the half.

Timpson took over 5 minutes off the clock driving down to the Refugio 36 before turning the ball over on downs with 2:13 left in the half.

Two plays later Brown threw a lateral pass to Campbell who against weaved his way through would-be tacklers, this time for a 58-yard score to tie the game with 1:24 to go before the half.

Refugio advances the state tile game for the 11th time with the first appearance coming in 1968 and the most recent appearance coming in 2019.

Refugio will be seeking their 6th state title. They were co-champions in 1970, and won outright title in 1982, 2011, 2016 and 2019.
