The Cougars have rushed for 353 yards and passed for 199. After being held to seven points by Tomball, Cinco Ranch erupted for 408 yards and 49 points against Morton Ranch in its district opener.

Paetow has gained 630 yards through three games, an average of 210. The Panthers have rushed for 458 yards and passed for only 172. Despite that production, they have scored 42 points and have yet to score more than 21 in a game.

The largest statistical difference is on defense. Cinco Ranch has allowed 561 yards, an average of 280.5 per game. Paetow has surrendered 1,345 yards—448.3 per game—and ranks last in District 22-6A in total defense through Week 3.

Cinco Ranch’s Young Playmakers

Cinco Ranch has received significant production from freshman running back Jaden Hodges and freshman quarterback Derek Berg.

Hodges leads District 22-6A with 428 all-purpose yards. He has rushed 21 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns, caught four passes for 102 yards and a touchdown, and returned four kickoffs for 148 yards.

His 8.5-yard rushing average and 25.5-yard receiving average make him a threat wherever he lines up. Hodges was particularly productive in the district opener, compiling 209 all-purpose yards against Morton Ranch.

Berg has completed 12 of 17 passes for 183 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. His 70.6-percent completion rate ranks among the best in the district, and his 61-yard completion demonstrates his ability to attack downfield.

Senior Brayden Gonzalez gives the Cougars a more experienced option in the backfield. Gonzalez has rushed 30 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns. He produced 100 yards in the district win over Morton Ranch.

The combination of Hodges and Gonzalez gives Cinco Ranch two runners with different experience levels but similarly reliable production. Together, they have accounted for 332 of the Cougars’ 353 rushing yards.

Paetow’s Ground Game

Paetow’s offense has been more effective on the ground than its scoring totals suggest. The Panthers have five players with at least 67 rushing yards.

Junior Z’yion Grear leads Paetow with 158 yards and two touchdowns on 28 attempts. Senior Curtis Zeno has added 106 yards on 19 carries, while senior Anthoni Terrell has gained 85 yards on only three attempts.

Terrell’s 28.3-yard rushing average includes a 73-yard run. He also leads Paetow with 92 receiving yards and has returned five kickoffs for 141 yards and three punts for 15. His 333 all-purpose yards rank third in District 22-6A.

Lucas Ennis has contributed 67 rushing yards, while quarterback Jaiden Noel has scored one rushing touchdown despite finishing with negative net rushing yardage because of sacks and other losses.

Paetow’s difficulty has been maintaining drives through the passing game. Noel has completed 10 of 38 attempts for 111 yards and one touchdown. Although he has not thrown an interception, his 26.3-percent completion rate has made the Panthers increasingly dependent on their running game.

Grear provides an alternative. He has shown the ability to contribute as both a runner and passer, creating an option for Paetow to vary its offensive approach.

Can Paetow Slow Cinco Ranch?

The matchup between Paetow’s defense and Cinco Ranch’s rushing attack is the central issue.

Paetow has allowed 781 rushing yards in three games, an average of more than 260 per contest. Jordan rushed for 234 yards against the Panthers in the district opener.

Cinco Ranch produced 242 rushing yards against Morton Ranch, including 132 from Hodges and 100 from Gonzalez. If Paetow cannot improve its run defense, the Cougars will be able to control possession while keeping Berg in favorable passing situations.

Senior Cayden Ayro leads Paetow’s effort to change that. Ayro has recorded 30 tackles, five tackles for loss, five sacks and two forced fumbles. He leads the Panthers in tackles and sacks and is one of the district’s most productive defenders.

Klenam Attipoe has added 21 tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack, four quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. Key’Tavien Williams has 22 tackles, while Deandre Williams, Jaylen Pitts and Adrian Gonzalez have 12 apiece.

Paetow has enough individual defensive production to create difficult plays. The Panthers’ challenge is producing consistent stops across entire possessions.

Cinco Ranch’s Defensive Assignment

Cinco Ranch has allowed 421 rushing yards and only 140 passing yards through two games. With Paetow averaging more than two and a half times as many rushing yards as passing yards, the Cougars should be able to concentrate heavily on the line of scrimmage.

Aiden Reagan leads Cinco Ranch with 17 tackles. Oliver Crumbliss has 15 tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack and two quarterback hurries. Maverick McConnell has 13 tackles and an interception, while Christian Jackson and Slade Copeland have nine tackles apiece.

Cinco Ranch must remain disciplined against Paetow’s different rushing options. Grear can hurt the Cougars on designed quarterback runs, Zeno offers steady production and Terrell can turn a single missed assignment into a long touchdown.

The Cougars cannot allow Paetow’s season record or passing numbers to create overconfidence. The Panthers have enough speed in the backfield to produce explosive plays if Cinco Ranch loses containment.

Turnovers and Field Position

Cinco Ranch has an even turnover margin. The Cougars have thrown one interception and lost one fumble while forcing one interception and recovering one fumble.

Paetow owns a plus-one margin. The Panthers have thrown one interception and lost two fumbles while forcing four turnovers—two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Aramis Weber and Cayden Asante have Paetow’s interceptions. Adrian Gonzalez returned a fumble recovery 20 yards for a touchdown against Jordan, while Deandre Williams has also recovered a fumble.

The Panthers need those takeaways to produce points and shorten the field for an offense that has struggled to sustain drives.

Special Teams

Hodges gives Cinco Ranch a significant special-teams weapon. He has returned four kickoffs for 148 yards, an average of 37 yards, with a long return of 63.

Steffan DuPlooy has averaged 40.7 yards on six punts for the Cougars, including a 62-yard punt and one placed inside the 20. Blas Bellolio has converted all six of his extra-point attempts.

Terrell leads Paetow’s return game with 141 yards on five kickoffs. Grear has added 59 yards on three returns.

Paetow has punted 18 times through three games, the highest total in the district. Key’Tavien Williams has averaged 29.8 yards per punt, with a long of 50. The Panthers will need to avoid giving Hodges and the Cinco Ranch offense short fields.

Players to Watch

Cinco Ranch

<li style="font-weight:
