Crandall survives Marshall, 48-47 in bi-district playoff thriller

MARSHALL- Luke Moffitt passed for 324 yards and 6 touchdowns and ran one in for the game-winner as Crandall survived a 48-47 thriller in a Class 5A DII bi-district playoff game at Maverick Stadium on Friday night.

Crandall (9-2) erased an early 7-0 deficit when Luke Moffitt tossed a pair of touchdowns to Samuel Omosigho and Josh Smith then Moffitt found Chris Abron in the flank for a 30-yard score to make the score, 21-7, midway through the first quarter.

Both teams traded barbs the rest of the first half as Smith reeled in his second touchdown catch of the game from Moffitt to give Crandall a 28-14 lead. Marshall answered with a pair of touchdown runs by J.Q. Davis to cut the deficit to 35-27 with 20 seconds left in the first half.

Crandall scored on the final play of the first half when Omosigho, an Oklahoma commit caught a short pass across the middle and turned up the right side then dragged several Marshall defenders for about five yards into the end zone with him.

Marshall (8-3) reeled off 20 straight points as J.Q. Davis reeled off three straight touchdowns to give Marshall a 47-41 lead early in the fourth quarter. Davis finished the night with a game-high 236 yards and five touchdowns.

Crandall converted an improbable fourth-and-ten at their own 44 yard-line with 3:50 left in the game when Moffitt tossed an 11-yard pass across the middle to Logan Wilbanks. Moffitt scored on a 3-yard keeper five plays later to give Crandall a 48-47 lead with 2:05 left in the game.

Marshall had one last chance to steal the victory and  marched all the way to the Crandall 9 yard-line with 13 seconds left in the game, but were stuffed on consecutive plays. Marshall attempted to run one last play inside the one yard-line but the game clock expired and the entire Crandall sideline stormed the field.
