No. 1 state-ranked Longview survives for a 21-13 win over upset-minded Lancaster

LONGVIEW- Taylor Tatum rushed for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Class 5A, No. 1 state-ranked Longview held on for a 21-13, come-from-behind district win over Lancaster at a packed Lobo Stadium.

Lancaster forced Longview into a three-and-out on the opening drive of the game and proceeded to put together an impressive 12 play, 84 yard scoring drive that took over five minutes off the clock. Lancaster took a 7-0 lead over Longview when Ti’Erick Martin hauled in a 15-yard scoring strike across the middle from quarterback Jaquavius Pipkin. Martin finished the night with 14 receptions for 155 yards.

Both teams traded possessions then Longview tied things up, 7-7 when Jalen Hale hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Allen. Hale, an Alabama commit took in a short pass and showed some nifty footwork as he eluded several defenders on his way to the end zone. Hale was held to just two catches for 48 yards on the night.

Lancaster (3-2, 1-1), the No. 3 ranked team in the latest SportsDay Class 5A poll gave Longview everything they could handle. Lancaster’s defense forced two turnovers and blocked a punt in the first half then took a 13-7 lead just before halftime on a 1-yard touchdown by Kyson Brown.

Longview (4-0, 2-0) took its first lead of the game late in the third quarter when Taylor Tatum busted through the line then outran everyone for a 37-yard touchdown to give Longview a 14-13 lead.

Lancaster had a chance to take the lead early in the fourth quarter when they moved the ball inside the Longview 5 yard-line, but Tadarion Boone intercepted a pass in the end zone to thwart the drive.

Longview pushed their lead to 21-13 with 59 seconds left in the game on a 3-yard scoring run by Tatum and Lancaster had one final chance to force overtime but Boone intercepted his second pass of the game to spoil the upset bid.
