With 3:12 remaining before halftime, the Seven Lakes Spartans scored to lead 21-0 and appeared to have the game well in hand. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Katy Taylor Mustangs would grab the lead and hold on for a 35-28 win.
The Mustang comeback started with 53-yard yard bomb from Joe Jefferson to Alei Sabek that set up a Dante Archie 2-yard run that put Taylor on the board just before the half.
The Mustangs would start the second half with the ball and march the field capped a 5-yard pass from Jefferson to Archie that cut the Spartan lead to 21-14.
Later in the 3rd quarter, Cherron Lewis scooted in for a 8-yard touchdown run and with the successful PAT the game was tied at 21-21.
But the Mustangs weren’t down in the 3rd quarter yet. Jefferson connected with Archie on a screen pass and Archie raced 49 yards for the score as the Mustangs leapt into the lead 28-21.
Mid-way through the 4th quarter, Jefferson connected with Daniel Bruns for an 8-yard TD pass and the Mustangs led 35-21.
The Spartans would fight back. Tanner Perez threaded the needle to Landon Ross who shock off two would-be tacklers and sprinted into the end zone for 67-yard TD to cut the Mustang lead to 35-28.
The Spartans attempted an onside kick but it was recovered by Taylor and the Mustangs were able to run out the clock.
Seven Lakes posted their 21-0 lead on two touchdown passes by Perez (one to Marcel Davis for 71-yards, one to Ross for 46-yards) and touchdown run by Barrett Hudson (4 yards).
Katy Taylor is now 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in district play. The Mustangs have their open week next week before playing Katy Tompkins the following week.
Seven Lakes falls to 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in district play. The Spartans play Katy Tompkins next week.
