I’ve got 30 minutes before I head out to cover my Saturday afternoon game, so I thought I’d glance through the scores from last night and jot down a few thoughts. This will be mainly Houston area games with a few others thrown in.
This is not a comprehensive review of all games. It is just a surface level take on what catches my eye.
Allen 41, Lake Highlands 7
Allen has actually been pretty quiet in amassing what I think is a championship pedigree this year. They were challenged by Prosper but found a way to win that game. Allen is still my pick to win 6AD1.
CE King 51, Shadow Creek 6
King will be the heavy favorite against the winner of the game I am covering this afternoon (Jordan vs. Stratford). Then looking face off in the 6AD2 Region 3 final against the winner of the Summer Creek/ Katy game.
Cypress Falls 46, Cinco Ranch 25
My son’s alma mater bows out in the second round. Congrat to Coach Dudley and his Cougars on an outstanding overachieving season. And shout out to Coach Brister and the Golden Eagles. I don’t think before the season started anyone had them playing in the 3rd of the playoffs.
Willis 34, Tomball 27
Well “Playoff Tomball” met their match in “Playoff Willis”. Willis advanced to take on a stout Forney team.
Port Arthur Memorial 44, A&M Consolidated 27 College Station 51, Beaumont United 7
Port Arthur Memorial has been on this path all year. College Station stumbled early but righted the ship. Port Arthur Memorial remains my pick for 5AD1 Region 3.
Pflugerville 52, Lufkin 14
One week after knocking off LaPorte, my big upset pick from last week rolls over Lufkin. Pflugerville will play the winner of the game I covering this late afternoon/ early evening, Austin Anderson vs Barbers Hill.
Brenham 27, Liberty Hill 24
The Cubs are a bit under the radar but will now have appeared in the regional semi-finals (lost to Randler 281-4 last year) in back-to-back years. Their reward this year? A matchup against Iowa Colony next weekend.
Iowa Colony 49, Pflugerville 7
Speaking of Iowa Colony they rolled past Pflugerville and are one win away from a matchup against the only team they have lost two in the last two years… Richmond Randle.
Port Neches-Grove 63, Ennis 29
PNG continues to march toward a regional final showdown against South Oak Cliff.
Richmond Randle 59, Pflugerville Connally 28
Speaking of Richmond Randle they advance to face the winner of this afternoon’s game between Waco University and Bastrop. Still point toward a fourth meeting in two years against Iowa Colony.
All I have time for now. Follow @txhsfb on Twitter for updates from Jordan v. Stratford and Austin Anderson v. Barbers Hill.
Of special note for me will be that Austin Anderson will be the 500th different high school football team I have seen play in the state of Texas.
