I’ll be live at this game Thursday night so I thought I’d get myself up to speed before the game and share some of my research with you.

Why does this game matter?

Magnolia is currently 4-0 in District 15-6A play and the only team undefeated in district play. Klein Collins is 4-1 in district play and sits just behind Magnolia. I don’t think this is the de facto district championship game, but it is close. Tomball is still in play for the title but a win in this game by Klein Collins would put them way ahead as they would have already beaten both of their primary competitors (Tomball Week 3). A Magnolia win would probably be the team’s biggest win since moving to 6A. A win keeps the Bulldogs in the discussion for the district crown which they could clinch with a win this week and win Week 10 against Tomball.

Projections For This Game

Dave Campbell’s Computer (otherwise known as Jerry Forest of pigskinprep.com) has Klein Collins as a 6 point favorite.

Massey Ratings (masseyratings.com) has Klein Collins as a 7 point favorite.

I have my own projector spreadsheet I use from time-to-time that looks at each team’s performance against their opponents average performance. That projector has the game as a toss up with a margin of less than 1 point.

What I Expect to See

I expect to see a contrast in style. Magnolia wants to control the clock by running the ball and complete screens and short passes. Klein Collins would like to use their wide opening running game to stretch the field and score quickly.

To me the key to the game is Klein Collins QB Braydon Schoggin versus the Magnolia defense. The game runs through Schoggin for the Tigers. He will get his yards both running and throwing. If he is ripping off big play after big play, this game will go in the Tigers’ favor. If the Bulldogs can contain Schoggin and limit his big play potential, this game will go in the Bulldogs’ favor.

I expect to see a winning score somewhere around 21 to 28 points. If it is higher than that it favors Klein Collins. A defensive slug fest favors Magnolia.
