I’ll be live at this game Thursday night so I thought I’d get myself up to speed before the game and share some of my research with you.

Why does this game matter?

Of course us in the media like to play the games before they happen. But if the other games happen within the range of what I expect, the top 3 teams in this district will be College Park, Willis and The Woodlands.

That leaves the 4th spot open for one of these teams. And I think the winner of this game will be the 4th place team in the district and take the 4th playoff spot and be the Division 1 #2 seed from 13-6A. They would likely play a tough opponent in the first round of the playoffs in Spring Westfield.

A Quick Look at the Teams

On the season the Grizzlies run the ball 63 percent of the time. That’s 204 carries for 1464 yards (244.0 yards per game) and 15 of the team’s TDs. Passing the ball the Grizzlies have completed 52% of their passes totaling 785 yards (130.8 pet game) and 12 of the team’s TDs.

Common Opponents

Both teams have played College Park and New Caney.

Grand Oaks lost to College Park 41-14. Conroe lost to College Park 35-0.

Projections On This Game

Dave Campbell’s Computer (otherwise known as Jerry Forest of pigskinprep.com) has Grand Oaks as a 2 point favorite.

Massey Ratings (masseyratings.com) has Conroe as a 1 point favorite.

I have my own projector spreadsheet I use from time-to-time that looks at each teams performance against their opponents average performance. That projector has Grand Oaks as a 4 point favorite.

So that all means that from a statistical scoring perspective, these teams are very evenly matched.

What I Expect to See

I expect to see a two very evenly matched teams on Thursday night.

Conroe will be a little more comfortable in a lower scoring game while Grand Oaks might like to see a little more scoring. Neither team wants this to be a shootout.

I expect to see a game where the winner scores between 21-28 points. In my opinion, if the score gets much over that it favors Grand Oaks. If the score is lower than that it favors Conroe.
