District play starts this week in several Greater Houston Area districts. Here’s a look at my view of those districts starting district play this week.
13-6A
The Woodlands is 0-2 to start the season following losses to North Shore and Houston Lamar. The Highlanders are still my pick to win 13-6A but the margin has closed a bit and I think several teams could be in the mix.
Teams to watch: The Woodlands, Oak Ridge, Willis, Conroe, New Caney
If pressed I would but those teams as the contenders for playoff spots and would put them in that order. I don’t see a large gap between any of those teams and I would have Willis, Conroe and New Caney in a virtual tie and wouldn’t be surprised by any combination of results for those three teams.
19-6A
Katy lost to Atascocita for the first time ever but is still the team to beat in 19-6A until someone proves otherwise.
Teams to watch: Katy, Tompkins, Jordan, Cinco Ranch, Paetow
This Friday night at Rhodes Stadium Tompkins and Katy square off in what I consider to be the defacto district title game. Jordan impressed last season and looks well positioned to finish 3rd with their first class of seniors. Cinco Ranch looks to continue their bounce back but was down to their 3rd string QB last week and injuries will be a key for the Cougars. Paetow tries to bounce back from a down season last year and return to the form that resulted in a 5A title in 2021.
20-6A
Hightower has opened the season 2-0 with wins over Pearland Dawson and Spring Westfield. Ridge Point has opened the season 0-2 with losses to Westlake (#4) and Dickinson. Still when these two meet next week, I think it will determine the district title.
Teams to watch: Ridge Point, Hightower, Travis, George Ranch, Clements, Elkins
Travis and George Ranch have impressed in non-district play with both going 2-0. Travis defeated Spring and Richmond Foster. George Ranch defeated Richmond Foster and Katy Taylor. The Week 5 game between this two will be a key game in district play. I’d have these two as favorites and 3rd and 4th in district with Clements and Elkins looking to play spoilers.
8-5AD1
Port Arthur Memorial and Barbers Hill have both opened the 2023 season 2-0 and would be my picks to finish 1st and 2nd in district play in some order.
Teams to Watch: Port Arthur Memorial, Babers Hill, Porter, La Porte, Crosby, Kingwood Park, Baytown Sterling
Crosby, a perennial playoff team, is off to a rough start with losses to C.E. King (6A #24) and Fort Bend Marshall (5AD2 #4) and may week struggle to grab a playoff spot this year. Port Arthur Memorial and Barbers Hill should finish 1st and 2nd in some order with Babers Hill, La Porte and Crosby competing for the 3rd and 4th spots and Kingwood Park and Baytown Sterling trying to play spoilers.
9-5AD1
Galveston Ball, despite a non-district loss to Texas City, is still the prohibitive favorite to win the district.
Teams to Watch: Galveston Ball, Houston Sterling, Houston Madison, Houston Wisdom, Houston Waltrip, Houston Milby
Galveston Ball is the clear favorite to win district. Sterling and Madison should compete for 2nd and 3rd with their Week 11 game determining the spots. A surprising Wisdom, Waltrip and Milby should compete for the 4th spot.
10-5AD1
This one of the most competitive districts in the state in 2022 and it should be same again in 2023.
Teams to Watch: Fulshear, Angleton, Manvel, Magnolia, Magnolia West
I honestly think any of the five teams could grab the top spot and any of these five could be sitting at home. And key action starts this week with Magnolia at Fulshear and Manvel at Angleton.
