Game 1 – Thursday, August 24, 5pm

Georgetown Grace Academy Griffins/ TCAF #10 (0-0 in 2022)

vs.

Waco Vanguard College Prep Vikings/ TAPPS D1 #10 (0-10 in 2022)

Georgetown Grace Academy Griffins

Coach: Brent Goleman

The Griffins outlook for 2023: “This is our first year playing football. We have 10 players and not a single one of them has ever played a down of tackle football. We will be fielding a full varsity schedule with 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 1 sophomore and 4 freshman. We will have to cross train multiple positions and try to be competitive when we reach district play week 4…  I am confident they will make a good showing and rise to the occasion. Nobody but them will ever be able to say they played in the first Griffin football game so they go down in the history books Week 1.”

What he expects from Waco Vanguard Prep: “I know that Waco Vanguard has had some 10 win seasons in their recent past and had a very young team last year. With Vanguard having so many players coming back, it will be a challenge for our guys to manage their emotions, the environment and adapt to the uniqueness that is Friday Night Lights.”

Key Players for the Vikings:

Hunter Maxwell

Noah Wilkes

Evan Hoyt

Caleb McGahey

Andrew Martin

Waco Vanguard College Prep Vikings

Coach: Jacob Lefebvre

The Vikings outlook for 2023: ” I think we’ll be going into this season with a higher degree of experience and maturity as opposed to last year. I’m looking forward to seeing my player’s hard work and determination pay off and see them perform at the level they are capable of… My players have been working all off season and hardened from last year’s tough season, they are ready and excited to play. “

What he expects from Georgetown Grace Academy: “We expect Georgetown Grace Academy to show up and show out. I expect a great football game between two great teams.”

Key Players for the Vikings: “A few of my key players are returning quarterback Drew Howard and Returning Wide receiver Owen Peters.”

Game 7 – Saturday, August 26, 7:30pm

Bastrop Tribe Warriors/ TAIAO D2 #1 (13-0 in 2022: TAIAO Division II Champion)

vs.

Sugar Land Logos Prep Lions/ TAPPS D1 #1 (10-2 in 2022; TAPPS Division I Champion)

Bastrop Tribe Warriors

The Warriors outlook for 2023: “Our team is in the process of rebuilding so we take one game at a time. We are coming from an undefeated season last year, so we are striving for excellence.”

(from Tony not Coach Esquivel) The Warriors graduated two key seniors in Chandler Goleman and Chuy Gonzales but are returning at least 5 juniors from the team that won the TAIOA Division 2 championship. The Warriors will also be replacing their head coach. The Warriors have won a minimum of ten games eight consecutive seasons, so don’t look for them to phased by the changes. The Warriors are looking for another deep run in 2023.

What he expects from Logos Prep: “To have a good sportsmanship game with no injuries.”

Key Players for the Warriors:

“We are six as one, so our key players is the TEAM.”

Sugar Land Logos Prep Lions

The Lions outlook for 2023:  The Lions start their defense of the TAPPS Division 1 State Title, but will have to do so after losing 13 graduated seniors. “We have a good amount of talent, but not the depth that we are used to. Both sides of the ball will be full of new players who will have a chance to make a name for themselves.”

What he expects from Bastrop Tribe: “Bastrop Tribe is a fierce team who reloads every year. After acquiring a championship of their own and capping off a perfect 13-0 season, Tribe knows how to win ball games and they go until the final second. Tribe is well-coached team that simply doesn’t make many mistakes. We will have our work cut out for us.”

(#4) Dylan Guillory

(#23) Canon Thompson

(#24) Caleb Espinoza

(#5) Nathan Mooney

Weatherford Christian Lions

Coach: Justin Tate

The Lions outlook for 2023: “We are very young. We have a lot of kids that haven’t played a ton of football that will need to step up and play a major role in what we are doing. If they can do that we will be a solid football team. I’m excited to see our kids compete and grow… We are just coming down from 4 years of 11 man football in which we made the playoffs all four years, going to the semifinals in 2021. We are excited to get our feet wet in six man and reestablish our program from top to bottom. Aside from players that work their tails off, we are fortunate to have an awesome Administration, outstanding coaching staff, and amazing parents that all support the changes we are making in our football program. Go Lions!”

What he expects from Pasadena First Baptist: “Pasadena First Baptist were the TAPPS D2 runners up last year. They graduated a big class but there are still some very good football players there. They play a physical, blue collar brand of football. They get in tight sets and run the ball downhill offensively and on defense side they are aggressive, bring pressure, and play well sideline to sideline. Coach Larson has done a fantastic job building that culture and we are excited to take the field against a program like that.”

Key Players for the Lions:

Jace Rodriguez – Spread Back/DB

Quinn McKammey – TE/LB

Ben Blackburn – Rec/DB
